When you hear the word insulation, you might immediately think that this is something that is important only in the wintertime, but in reality, insulation will benefit you whether it is hot or cold outside. Why is that? It is because insulation will keep the temperature inside your home from being affected by the outside weather, so you will save on heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

To measure how efficiently your insulation blocks outside influence, a measurement called R-value is used. Interestingly, while your insulation might have a specific R-value, your wall in its entirety might have a different value all together. This can be affected by cracks and holes in your wall, compressed insulation (which is less efficient) or even moisture. You will find that homes built in warmer climates usually have less insulation than those in colder climates, even though they could benefit from it in the summertime.
