There are some people who love squirrels and do not mind them eating out of their bird feeders. Other people would rather not feed the squirrels, since they scare away the birds. Here are a few things to try to get your bird feeder squirrel-free.
The first thing you will want to try is to get a caged bird feeder or a squirrel-resistant bird feeder. Just keep in mind that if you do get a caged bird feeder that only small birds will be able to eat from it and that if a squirrel is small enough, it could possibly get through the cage.
Another thing is that you will want to make sure that your pole if using one, is not easily accessible. You could try a squirrel baffle that attaches to the pole. Some people will use a slinky to wrap around the pole. The squirrels will not be able to climb up the slinky.
The last thing to try is to feed the squirrels. If they have their own food, they may leave your bird feeder alone. You could try a dried corn cob feeder, or build one yourself.
These are just a few things to try to get your bird feeder squirrel-free so that you are able to enjoy the birds more.
