Keep the ground well-vegetated and well-planted on your property. Do not have exposed soil on your property that is going to erode or wash away. Wind also strips loose dry soil from land over time. You want to have properly located pervious surfaces to accommodate water runoff on your property. Pervious surfaces allow water to properly percolate down thru the ground. Exposed soil is not a good thing to have because if it ultimately going to wash away with rain and/or wind. Water is going to take that soil and that sediment with it and out into the storm drains, drainage canals, and out into the water bodies which causes a host of issues.

The sediment in the water going out into the oceans kills coral and causes a reduction of fish and seaweed populations. It has the same detrimental effects on lakes, rivers, and streams. So, you really want to hold on to your soil along with your water. Keep your land well vegetated. Trees and plant roots are going to hold soil in place. Mulch and other non-vegetative ground coverings can also be helpful in preventing erosion.
