I know that most people aren’t even aware of or do not even look at it is where is the location of the curbside (street utility) storm drain is on the street just outside your property. Is it up the road which would indicate that you are at a higher elevation portion of the street? Is it right near your property or right in front of your property indicating you are on a lower elevation point down the street? Depending on where that drain is located reflects where water is going to flow during heavy rains. For instance, if that storm drain is right near your property, or right in front of your property, water is going to be draining towards that drain during heavy rains.

A lot of times, we don’t think about these things when it rains which it does extremely hard periodically. We kind of get uptight and then we see the water building up, we think “Wow, I wish I did not procrastinate on certain things”. You tell yourself, “I wish I had installed drainage measures and things like that.” But that storm drain is out there, if it is located right near your property, just be aware that during those torrential rains, which surpassed the capacity of the cities or the governmental drainage infrastructure, the ditches and canals, the underground drains, the storm drains on the street, the water cannot enter it anymore if the utility drainage infrastructure capacity is surpassed and it starts to back up. The water actually starts to back up in the utility pipes because all those ditches and canals are filled with water due to the torrential rains occurring,. Thus, water starts to backup up into the street adjacent to your property. Think of it kind of like a backing up toilet, it is flowing backward. It is coming up. And therefore the rate of water buildup and flooding increases exponentially on the surface of the land on and around your property. This is water coming down not only from rain but also water backing up from the storm drains and building up on the street and coming onto your property.
